Created by the ordinance of 23 September 1967 , the Economic Interest Grouping (EIG) was designed to offer companies wishing to maintain their individuality and autonomy, while pooling certain of their economic activities, a legal framework intermediate between a company and an association, better suited to the specific characteristics of many of them as well as the intentions of their promoters. Its purpose is to "facilitate or develop the economic activity of its members, to improve or increase the results of this activity." Unlike a company, the EIG is not intended to generate profits for itself. Unlike an association, it enjoys full legal personality from the date of its registration. The EIG is also characterized by great organizational flexibility: most of its operating rules are indeed left to contractual freedom. As an instrument of cooperation between companies, it is found in various fields, such as research, the operation of shopping centers, the joint practice of regulated professions... Its success inspired the European Economic Interest Grouping , which, in turn, led to some modifications of the national text, with the transposition law of 13 June 1989 , before its codification in 2000, in Articles L. 251-1 and following of the Commercial Code.
