The financial markets supervisory body is the Financial Markets Authority (AMF). Established by Law No 2003-706 of 1 August 2003 on financial security, it replaces the supervisory authorities that existed until then: the Commission des opérations de bourse (COB) , the Conseil des marchés financiers (CMF) , and the Conseil de discipline de la gestion financière (CDGF) .

The Financial Markets Authority is an independent public authority with legal personality . Its missions, composition, functioning, and powers are governed by Articles L. 621-1 to L. 621-35 of the Monetary and Financial Code. Its president is authorized to act on its behalf before any court .

Established by Ordinance No 67-833 of 28 September 1967, the COB was responsible for monitoring the information provided to holders of marketable securities and the public regarding companies that publicly solicit savings and the securities issued by these companies, as well as ensuring the proper functioning of stock exchanges. - Adde: CONAC, The regulation of stock markets by the Commission des Opérations de Bourse (COB) and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), LGDJ, 2002.

Established by Law No 96-597 of 2 July 1996 on the modernization of financial activities, the CMF was responsible for ensuring that investment service providers operating in France, market undertakings, and clearing houses complied with the rules of good conduct applicable to them under the laws and regulations in force.

The CDGF, which replaced the Disciplinary Council of Collective Investment Schemes in Transferable Securities (See Law No 98-546 of 2 July 1998, Art. 40 I, JORF 3 July 1998), imposed sanctions for any violation of the laws and regulations applicable to collective investment schemes in transferable securities and investment services, as well as any breach of professional practice rules likely to harm the interests of shareholders, unit holders, or principals.
